Are you thinking of visiting a chiropractor for your back or neck pain but aren’t sure what techniques they use? Most people have heard of the manual chiropractic technique, which involves applying pressure with the fingers, hands, and forearms. However, there are other techniques that are much more gentle. Our chiropractor uses one of the gentle techniques, the Koren Specific Technique (KST) in order to correct subluxations.
What is KST Chiropractic?
KST chiropractic is an advanced form of spinal analysis that involves using a three-step system to locate musculoskeletal malfunctions and correct them. It was first developed in 2003 by Dr. Ted Koren, which is where the technique gets its name.
The KST steps include:
- Challenging – Look for indications of musculoskeletal malfunctions
- Checking – Check to make sure malfunctions are present and determine which joints to adjust
- Correcting – Perform an adjustment to improve the function of the joint
Challenging Areas of Your Body
Challenging is the first step in the process, and it involves examining and evaluating every section of the body from the top of the head to the toes. This is an essential step in the diagnostic process because it allows our chiropractor to examine all the areas of your body and note areas that may not be functioning correctly.
Checking for Imbalances
Once the entire body has been evaluated, it’s time to check for specific imbalances. For example, upon looking at leg length, one leg may be shorter than the other. This is often due to a misalignment in the SI joint, hips, or spine. The checking portion of the Koren Specific Technique allows our chiropractor to locate the misaligned joint or malfunctioning joint (which is known as a subluxation so that it can be corrected in the last stage of the process.
Correcting Subluxations
Once the correct joint has been located, it is corrected using a hand-held adjusting device called an Arthrostim and a special chiropractic table. This is the last step in the process, and it is called the correcting step. The corrections continue for every joint that needs to be adjusted. After a few adjustments, our chiropractor may ask you to move a certain section of your body in order to determine if the adjustment achieved the desired result or if another adjustment is needed. This last step helps ensure that you receive the maximum benefits from your KST chiropractic session.
